A week ago Sunday, I was asked if I'd be willing to accept a calling to play the piano in Primary. I about had a heart attack and luckily didn't have to answer right on the spot. I was given some time to think and pray about it. Well...in Relief Society, while the teacher was giving the lesson, she looked directly at me and said "if you're given a calling, it's your duty/responsibility to accept it and then magnify it"... there was my answer. For about a month or so, I've had a feeling that I'd be getting another calling and I had a feeling that it was going to be outside of my comfort zone. Playing the piano for Primary is WAY outside of my comfort zone. It is going to make me grow leaps and bounds and I know that it'll be an opportunity to let my testimony also grow leaps and bounds as I'll be having/needing to exert a HUGE amount of faith.
The truth is...I have never liked playing the piano. Growing up I played the piano from about 2nd grade until my senior year... piano lessons every Tuesday. Practicing for even 10 minutes a day was torture. More often then not I'd go to piano lessons without having practiced at all. So embarrassing every time. I can play a few hymns and other songs, but it does not come naturally...at...all. I have to practice like crazy to get even one song down. Simply put... playing the piano does not hold fond memories. I have a lot of scripting and prayer to do to change my feelings towards the piano but I know that eventually I'll grow to love practicing and playing the primary songs. It'll be good for our home to be filled with uplifting songs of the gospel.
The First Presidency has said:
“Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord.
“Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end” (Hymns, 1985, p. ix).
The singing of hymns is one of the best ways to put ourselves in tune with the Spirit of the Lord. I wonder if we are making enough use of this heaven-sent resource in our meetings, in our classes, and in our homes.
